PGWP Open Work Permit Extension
Thanks to a new temporary policy, Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders can now extend their work permit in Canada for an additional 18 months. This policy has made it much easier for eligible PGWP holders to continue working in Canada, especially since getting an extension used to be quite challenging. The new system introduced by the Canadian government is a great help for those whose PGWPs are expiring.
In general, PGWPs cannot be extended. If you want to continue working in Canada after your PGWP expires, you would usually need to apply for a different type of work permit. However, if your PGWP has expired or is set to expire between September 20, 2021, and December 31, 2023, you might be eligible for a one-time open work permit that allows you to work for up to 18 more months.
PGWP Extension 2023 Opt-In Option
This option is available only for those whose PGWPs have already expired or are about to expire, and who received an email from IRCC by April 6, 2023.
If you received the Opt-In email, you’ll need to log into your MyCIC, GCKey, or IRCC secure account. Once you’re logged in, you can opt in for the 18-month extension by simply selecting the option provided.
Important Points to Remember:
- Ensure you are currently living in Canada.
- Make sure your address is up to date.
- Check that your passport details are correct and that your passport is valid until June 2025 or later.
According to IRCC, if you follow the steps correctly, you should receive your PGWP extension by the end of June 2023 at your mailing address.
