What is Outland (Abroad) Sponsorship?
The Family Sponsorship Program offers an Outland Spousal Sponsorship Stream that allows Canadian citizens or permanent residents to sponsor their spouse or common-law partner for permanent residency in Canada, regardless of where they currently live. The main goal of this program is to reunite families as quickly as possible, with most applications being processed within approximately 12 months. While it was initially designed for applicants living outside Canada, individuals living in Canada can also apply for Outland Spousal Sponsorship. This option may allow them to travel in and out of Canada while their application is being processed.
Requirements for the Canadian Sponsor and Their Spouse
- Both the sponsor and their spouse must be at least 18 years old.
- The couple must be legally married or in a common-law partnership, having lived together for at least 12 consecutive months.
- Neither the sponsor nor their spouse should have received permanent residence through Spousal Sponsorship in the five years prior to the application.
- Neither the sponsor nor their spouse should be incarcerated, bankrupt, or facing criminal charges.
- The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- The sponsor must be willing and able to financially support their spouse once they arrive in Canada.
- The spouse must not be inadmissible to Canada.
