Extend a Study Permit in Canada

If your study permit is nearing its expiry date but you need to continue your education, you’ll need to apply for an extension. This requires submitting an application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to extend your status as a student in Canada. Most applications must be submitted electronically through IRCC’s online portal, unless specific exceptions apply to your situation.

Maintaining Status in Canada

It’s crucial to follow the timeline of your authorized stay and apply for extensions before your current permit expires. You must also follow all conditions listed on your study permit, including any work restrictions about type of employment, maximum weekly hours, and study requirements. Take time to review your permit details carefully to understand all conditions.
If you don’t apply for renewal before your permit expires, you’ll need to leave Canada before reapplying to return. However, if you submit your extension application before your current permit expires, you’ll benefit from “implied status” – allowing you to legally remain in Canada until a decision is made on your application. Always keep proof of your application submission (online confirmation receipt, courier tracking, etc.).
Remember that implied status only applies to temporary residence applications. If you’re applying for permanent residence, you can only remain in Canada if you already have valid temporary status as a visitor, student, or worker.
Should you accidentally lose your status by not following your permit conditions, you may apply for status restoration within 90 days of losing status.

Changing your school or program

As an international student in Canada, you have the flexibility to change your educational institution (DLI) after arriving with your study permit. However, proper procedures must be followed to maintain your immigration status.

You can change your institution at various points in your journey:

  • While your study permit application is still being processed
  • After your permit is approved but before you’ve entered Canada
  • After arriving in Canada with your study permit

This change can happen before starting classes at your original institution or after completing a semester there.

Generally, international students have approximately 150 days from when they stop attending their current institution to enroll in courses at a different DLI.
